2016 La Clairiére Pinot Noir

Our first release of this single vineyard wine. 100% estate grown from our second high density (7700 vines/ha) North facing Pinot Noir block, planted to 7 different clones. The soils for this block differ from the other Pinot Noir blocks, as it is a duplex soil with ironstone gravels over micaceous siltstone clay, with plenty of quartz. These soils are over 10 Million years old. We planted this block in 2010/11 after clearing the land, hence the name “La Clairiére” which means “the clearing” in French.

Low yields (<0.5kg per vine – 30hl/ha), handpicked at 12.5 Baumè, hand sorted in the vineyard and again in the winery, 100% whole berry wild yeast fermentation for 21-24 days. Matured in French Oak barriques and hogsheads (40% new) for 15 months. Bottled unfined, unfiltered.

The wine opens with pretty dried flowers (think violets, rose petals etc), red and blue fruits, with a dark undercurrent of minerals, and fine cured meats. The palate follows with more violets, fennel seed, red and black cherries and blueberries, and a chewy textural mouthfeel. The wine retains a dark core that reminds me of ironstone and graphite, which runs right through the middle of the wine. A complex, mysterious wine, one that requires contemplation and conversation.
