2016 Home Vineyard Pinot Noir
100% Estate Grown Pinot Noir sourced from our 22 year old dry grown vines. Low yields (approx 1.2kg/vine or 4.5 tonne/ha average) to ensure perfect ripeness. Handpicked, 80% whole berries, 20% whole bunches, wild yeast fermentation for 21 days. Matured in 30% new French oak barriques for 12 months, then a further 3 months blended in tank prior to bottling to allow for natural clarification and integration.
The wine has a complex bouquet of ripe red fruits, fine spice and dried culinary herbs (sage, thyme). The palate is silky and persistent; showing macerated berries, red liquorice, iodine, and basalt-derived minerality. A sweet succulent mid-palate follows with fine dusty tannins and a long textural finish. Bottled in June 2017.
2820 bottles produced. Alc.13.5%. Cellar to 2024
2016 La Clairiére Pinot Noir
Our first release of this single vineyard wine. 100% estate grown from our second high density (7700 vines/ha) North facing Pinot Noir block, planted to 7 different clones. The soils for this block differ from the other Pinot Noir blocks, as it is a duplex soil with ironstone gravels over micaceous siltstone clay, with plenty of quartz. These soils are over 10 Million years old. We planted this block in 2010/11 after clearing the land, hence the name “La Clairiére” which means “the clearing” in French.
Low yields (<0.5kg per vine – 30hl/ha), handpicked at 12.5 Baumè, hand sorted in the vineyard and again in the winery, 100% whole berry wild yeast fermentation for 21-24 days. Matured in French Oak barriques and hogsheads (40% new) for 15 months. Bottled unfined, unfiltered. The wine opens with pretty dried flowers (think violets, rose petals etc), red and blue fruits, with a dark undercurrent of minerals, and fine cured meats. The palate follows with more violets, fennel seed, red and black cherries and blueberries, and a chewy textural mouthfeel. The wine retains a dark core that reminds me of ironstone and graphite, which runs right through the middle of the wine. A complex, mysterious wine, one that requires contemplation and conversation.

2016 The Enclave Pinot Noir
The second release of this wine. 100% Estate Grown exclusively from one of our high density Pinot Noir blocks. The wine gets its name from the meaning – Enclave: a unique place enclosed within another territory. This particular vineyard block is positioned in the prized North-East facing mid-slope of our property, at a high-density of 7700-10250 vines, with 12 different clones of Pinot Noir. The soils in this block are known as Red Ferrosols, derived from volcanic basalt deposits that are over 10 million years old.
Low yields (<0.5kg per vine – 30hl/ha), handpicked at 12.5 Baumè, hand sorted in the vineyard and again in the winery, 80% whole bunch, 20% whole berry wild yeast fermentation for 21-24 days. Matured in French Oak barriques and hogsheads (40% new) for 15 months. Bottled unfined, unfiltered.
On the nose, this wine jumps out of the glass with sweet red fruits, wood smoke, earthy minerality and sous bois. The palette is full and long, layered with crunchy red berry fruits, cured meats, oriental spices, and interwoven with intense, yet silky tannins. This wine has been built for aging, with great structure, balance and purity already evident in such a young wine, proving the hard work of high density planting really does pay off.
